Consumers Get Mixed Messaging on Certified Compostable Plastics

September 30, 2020 the Minister of the Environment, Conservation & Parks proposed changes to Ontario’s Food and Organic Waste Policy Statement that expands the types of materials that may be collected in municipal green bins and other collection systems, including certain compostable products and packaging such as certified compostable coffee pods.

While Ontario’s waste sector welcomes efforts by producers and retailers to create more environmentally friendly products, including compostable plastic products such as bags, coffee pods and plates/cutlery, there are some key issues that should preclude their widespread adoption in green bin programs.
