Competition Bureau Perspectives
(The Competition Act, EPR Programs & the Waste Management Industry)

Majid Charania, Director of Compliance, Competition Bureau of Canada

Greg Lang, Major Case Director and Strategic Policy Advisor, Competition Bureau of Canada

Ontario has recently finalized a new Regulation for the Recycling of Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Batteries and initiated the transition of the former WEEE IFO-based diversion program and is currently finalizing a Hazardous and Special Products (HSP) Regulation and subsequent transition under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act (RRCEA). Blue Box regulations and a program transition are also on the horizon. These regulations and program transitions will be significant from a service provider and municipality perspective and the role of the Competition Bureau and Competitions Act.

Learn about the role of competition in the Canadian economy and how the federal Competition Act applies to producers and waste management organizations carrying out their responsibilities generally and under EPR laws specifically. As Ontario expands a new regulatory framework for diversion under the RRCEA, understanding the limitations that the Competition Act places on marketplace behaviours will be crucial to success
